Book Review: Glitter and Gloss by Vibha Batra



I am not much of an e-book fan, I bet, most of us aren’t, and we know why, the pleasure of reading an already print book is different from that of a virtual one. I am saying this because lately I am being offered a lot of e-books to review, and to some, I have turned down, to few, I have accepted. And, today I will be reviewing one of which I received, I am talking about Glitter and Gloss by Vibha Batra, and I am glad to have said ‘Yes’ to review it. The blurb of the book had it all.

About the Book:
Glitter and Gloss published by Bloomsbury publication recounts the story of a sweet, chirpy, hyper girl named “Misha’ or ‘Mishkin’, a Makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics, who after series of mishaps, twists and turns meets Akshay Agarwal (a tall, good-looking chap) at a fashion show and falls in love with him, not only is he handsome and dashing (he was mistaken as one of the models), but he is rich and is the owner of a jewellery business based in Mumbai and Dubai. After the incident of their cute-meet, what follows aftermath gave me all the feel-good love vibes. However, all does not end well there, the hitch of their love story happens to be ‘Didi’, not the Dexter Laboratory one, but a strict, mother-like, classy sister of Akshay, who meets Misha and thinks is not much of a Bahu material- #garrulous, #gawky, #geeky and #gainfully employed. Misha tries her best to fit into the shoe of becoming the perfect kind of ‘Wife/Bahu’ Didi is looking for his darling brother. Even if it means lying at the expense of hiding her true identity and giving a false impression of her dysfunctional family. Will Misha succeed in the quest to pave her way into Didi’s heart into becoming the ‘Aadarsh Bahu’ of a typical Marwadi household? You might want to grab a copy and find out.

My Take on the Book:
Like I said I am not much of an e-book reader but if the blurb of ‘Glitter and Gloss’ caught my attention then the plot of the book sure did justice to it. The novel is just 200 pages and I had finished it in one and a half sitting (despite my busy schedule). There was no pushing my phone away once I started to read it. Every bit of the narration was a ‘page turner scroll-er,’ the dialogues used were impressive. It is written in a sassy style with a hint of drama which will allow you to connect with the narration. The story is a mix of both funny and heartwarming at the same time, more of a rom-com to lighten your day (you may avoid reading it .i.e. if you don't like cheesy romance), the witty one-liners will leave you Lol-ing, it is sharp and contemporary. The character in Misha surely made me feel like there is a little bit of 'Misha' in every girl. She is chirpy, cheerful, and gawky and suffers from a slight foot-in-the-mouth syndrome. She is trying her best to lure the boy of her dream into her arms and making the family accept her.
However, in her quest to becoming the perfect Bahu, Misha goes through some ups and downs and a little lying to save herself from the overprotective sister of Akii. Hands down, the book is precise and not stretched, surely an intriguing plotline to make you want to know what happens next.  The use of Bollywood and Hindi reference is refreshing and will amuse you for sure.
Misha is a loveable character and we might just be able to connect with her way of being devoted to her passion, her principal towards being independent is relatable with every Indian woman, she is a little wild, clumsy and a misfit but that doesn’t make us loathe her. Akshay is delicate, good looking, and the perfect gentleman.  Rekha Aunty (a gorgeous, elegant and quirky lady), Sammy (Misha’s roommate) and Poulomi (her BFF) are few of the characters who left a mark on my mind even after I had put the book down.  
Overall, the author took me on a journey of glamour, riches, designer outfits and makeup essentials and how a typical independent woman has to go through some grilling in order to embody herself on becoming an ideal ‘Sanskari Bahu.’
What will happen when Misha and Akshay collide over work? Will Misha win Didi (and the Kha-Pee Panchayat) over with her Stepford Wife Act? Will she continue to be the poster child for the inherent evils of the Bahu Brigade? Or will she learn to ‘lau’ herself before the whole world and its wife can do the same?
